So here's the plan

Last week I alluded to the fact that I was actually going to attempt a fall vegetable garden. Well, here's the plan. For now.

As the tomatoes, summer squash and beans die off, I'll start replanting my small beds with new rounds of spinach, carrots, garlic, etc. I realize this is very much a work in progress - I don't think, for instance, that melon transplants or potatoes may make it after all.

I'm heartened to know that I haven't missed my window of opportunity. According to the Purdue University Extension, I'll still have time after my unexpected absence to get some planting for this year. According to its calendar, I have a few more weeks for fall planting - and even into September for radishes. So maybe I can pull this off after all!

I'd love to hear how this goes for you! I'm trying to find a few things to put in NOW, mid-season in place of the lettuce I uprooted & gave to a local food shelf. I'm having a hard time finding anything for sale to plant, even seeds, this time of year!

I think it is too late for melons, they take about 75 days to mature and that might be once the fruit appears. You might try potatoes but it would be cutting it close.

Parsnips are supposed to get sweeter the longer they are in the garden in the winter.

I'm going to sow more this fall than I usually do... greens, lettuce, onions, radishes, short-season beans.

City Girl, try replanting lettuce and spinach! I agree -it's hard finding anything to plant. May have to order online (of course, it's a great excuse to get your garlic too...)

Carol, thanks as always for the feedback! I'm a little new at the fall planting thing, so I appreciate it!

Turnips do well in the fall. They don't mind a light frost and are made sweeter by it.

I live in a zone 9, and fall planting IS our spring planting, in a way. We put out our tomato plants after Valentine's day.

Good idea! While we're headed to actual freezing temps this weekend, I'll keep in mind for next year.
